God of rainbows and butterflies, of waterfalls and mountain ranges, of newborn babies and wise elders, we are awed by your creation! Help us to slow down and see the blessings of your handiwork that surround us each day. Amen.
Genesis 1:2-2:3
The story of creation is among the most familiar in all of Scripture. This text, which tells the story of God’s creation of the world in seven days -- while far from being a scientific account of how the earth was made -- serves an even more important function of showing us the characteristics of our creator: one who brings order from chaos, one who shines light through darkness, one who delights in all that is created and calls this creation good. Through the telling of the creation story, we learn that we’re made in the image of God. Read this story from a favorite story Bible, either all at once, or divided over several days, perhaps even using clay or chenille stems to shape different parts of creation while listening.
Alphabet Prayers
Using the letters of the alphabet as a guide, create a thank you prayer to God, naming or drawing something created by God for each letter. Challenge your family to see how many different alphabet prayers you can make.
Art: Something From Nothing
While it is fun to use art kits and fancy supplies, it can be a fun challenge to create something from everyday objects around our homes and from God’s natural creation. Look around your home, your recycling bin, and your yard for materials to use: cardboard, sticks, weeds, paper, old magazines, etc. As a family, create a plan to make a piece of art together using the objects you find and any art or craft supplies you have available.
